Beach Volleyball Sweeps Pelican Classic

METAIRIE, La.-For the second time this season, the LSU beach volleyball team went undefeated in tournament play, sweeping their matches in the Pelican Classic at the White Sands Volleyball Club in Metairie on Saturday.
With the wins, LSU improves to 8-3 on the year and will have the next week off for spring break. The Lady Tigers will return to action on April 2 against Grand Canyon in the LSU Beach Invitational at Mango’s Beach Volleyball Club in Baton Rouge off of Sherwood Forest.
“It was another good team effort,” said associate head coach Russell Brock. “Our team is deep enough and has enough experience to have the opportunity to rest people and still perform at a really high level. To come out and win four matches and sweep the weekend, it was fun.”
The Lady Tigers began the tripleheader with their first match against Spring Hill. No. 1 pair Katie Lindelow and Ashley Allmer won in straight sets 21-10, 21-13 to give LSU a 1-0 lead. Helen Boyle and Lilly Kessler followed at the two with a win in two sets 21-16, 21-12. Callan Molle and Cati Leak tallied the Lady Tigers’ third point of the match with a 21-18, 21-7 victory on court three.
On court four, Riley Young and Cheyenne Wood notched the fourth point two sets 21-15, 21-19. Carly Morris and Megan Davenport fought a three-set battle at the five, winning 21-14, 14-21 and 15-13 to finish off Spring Hill by a score of 5-0.
In the second match of the morning, LSU picked up where it left off with another shutout victory over Missouri Baptist. Freshmen Jeni Clark and Addison Hoven claimed a victory in straight sets 21-5 and 21-18 on court two. Orellana and Kessler partnered at the one, securing the second point for LSU in a two-setter, 21-13 and 21-15. Young and Wood played at the three spot and took their second consecutive match of the day, winning 21-9, 21-6 to give LSU a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers finished off their shutout of Missouri Baptist at the four and five spots. Davenport and Victoria Boraski garnered the fourth point for LSU in straight sets 21-9 and 21-7. Morris and Roxanne McVey wrapped up the match at the four, tallying a two-set win by a score of 21-6, 21-9 for another shutout victory.
LSU wrapped up the Pelican Classic with its third and final victory against UNO. Kessler and Molle started at the two, defeating UNO in straights 21-13, 21-13.
On court one, Lindelow and Allmer went to three sets in their match, fighting to earn the Lady Tigers’ second point of the match by a score of 21-11, 23-25 and 15-13.
Hoven and Clark built a 3-0 advantage for LSU at the three, as the duo took their match in straight sets 21-13 and 21-10. McVey and Morris powered past UNO on court five, winning 21-11, 21-9. Young and Wood concluded the stellar performance for the Lady Tigers, finishing with a straight set victory on court four, 21-15 and 21-13, lifting LSU to its third victory of the day and a complete sweep of the tournament.
“We knew going into the weekend that we would have some opportunities to give some people a chance to compete, and we felt like we could still be competitive even if we shuffled the lineup a bit,” said Brock. “It as nice to see the girls respond when given the opportunity. All of them really stepped up and showed they were willing to help our team be successful.”
The Lady Tigers will return from spring break later this week to prepare for their next set of matches, as they are set to host the LSU Beach Invitational at Mango’s in two weeks.
“We’re going to get healthy … we’re going to try and get some rest and give them a few days off for spring break,” said Brock. “We expect to be a better volleyball team when we get back in the sand.”
