METAIRIE, La. - The No. 12 ranked LSU beach volleyball was defeated in straight matches on Saturday afternoon, losing to No. 6 Arizona and No.8 Georgia State on the final day of the Green Wave Invitational at the White Sands Beach Volleyball Courts. LSU falls to 11-6 on the year and will return to action next weekend in the Palmetto Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina.

“It was pretty disappointing,” said associate head coach Russell Brock. “I think we came into today capable of winning both of the matches. We really feel like we need to be winning these and to not be able to pull it off was disappointing. We’re just not quite that ready, and that means we need to worker harder to get more prepared. We’re not ready to be done, and we’re not ready for that to be the best we can be this year. We know we can be better and we’re going to work to be better.”

In the first match against No. 6 Arizona, Carly Morris and Cheyenne Wood were defeated in straight sets 21-12, 21-9 on court five, giving Arizona a 1-0 lead. At the four, Riley Young and Mandi Orellana won in a two-setter 25-23, 21-14 to tie the match for the Tigers. LSU grabbed the lead 2-1 on court three as Cati Leak and Callan Molle earned a victory in straight sets 21-11, 21-17. Arizona rallied back, defeating No. 2 pair Helen Boyle and Lilly Kessler in two sets 21-17, 21-18 to tie the match. On court one, Katie Lindelow and Ashley Allmer fell in straight sets 21-17, 21-8 to give Arizona the 3-2 match win over the Tigers.

LSU took on No. 8 Georgia State in a rematch from earlier in the season. The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Victoria Boraski and Megan Davenport fell in straight sets 21-11, 21-16. On court four, Georgia State tacked on its second point of the match as Riley Young and Mandi Orellana were defeated in a three-setter 21-12, 16-21, 19-21. At the two, Kessler and Boyle cut the Tigers deficit to 2-1 after claiming a victory in two sets 21-12, 21-17. Despite being down a set, Lindelow and Allmer forced a deciding third set at the one but were unable to collect a point, losing 20-22, 21-16, 5-15. The Panthers secured their fourth point of the match on court three as Molle and Leak fell in a tightly conteseted two-setter 21-19, 21-15, giving Georgia State the 4-1 victory.

“When we go up against teams in the top 10, all of our losses are have come from that group,” said Brock. “I don’t feel like we’re at the disadvantage we’ve been in in the past as far as man power. We’re not at the point where we can compete generally with all of these programs, and it’s a matter of executing with more consistency and even more confidence. We didn’t hit shots with the confidence and aggressiveness sometimes against teams that are good or strong. Average shots aren’t going to fall if you’re not comfortable enough to really execute it. You’re not going to give yourself the best opportunity in those situations.”

LSU returns to action next Saturday against Carson Newman at 12 p.m. for the Palmetto Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina.
