Communications Student Assistant
METAIRIE, La.- The No. 12 ranked LSU beach volleyball team collected two wins on the first day of the Green Wave Invitational at the White Sands Volleyball Courts. The Tigers defeated Houston Baptist and No. 18 Tulane to improve to 11-4 on the year. LSU will go for the sweep tomorrow morning against Arizona and Georgia State.
“It was a bit of a crazy day," said associate head coach Russell Brock. "We didn’t play our best throughout, but we played well enough to get these two wins. We need to make sure we win matches and sets that are tight. To win against Tulane at their place is always going to be tough.”
In the opening match against Houston Baptist, Carly Morris and Cheyenne Wood earned LSU’s first points with a 21-15, 21-19 victory at the five. The Tigers claimed an early 2-0 lead after Callan Molle and Riley Young knocked off their opponents on court four in straight sets 21-14, 21-18. LSU continued its dominance at the three spot as Cati Leak and Mandi Orellana won in a two-setter 21-10, 21-11. On court two, Helen Boyle and Lilly Kessler tallied the fourth point of the match for the Tigers with a 21-17, 21-10 victory. No. 1 duo Katie Lindelow and Ashley Allmer capped off the match for LSU, claiming a 21-7, 21-13 win, giving the Tigers a 5-0 win over the Huskies.
The Tigers finished off Day 1 of the tournament with a match against Tulane. Wood and Morris gave LSU a 1-0 lead after winning in straight sets 22-20, 21-15 on court five. Young and Orellana followed up with a straight set victory at the four by a score of 21-16, 24-22. At the one, Allmer and Lindelow fell in straight sets 21-19, 21-15 as the Green Wave cut into LSU’s lead 2-1. No. 3 pair Leak and Molle rallied after dropping the first set, coming back to garner a three-set win 19-21, 21-13, 15-9 to clinch the match for LSU. At the two, Boyle and Kessler finished off the day with a win in three sets 21-17, 6-21, 15-10, lifting the Tigers to a 4-1 win over Tulane.
“I think that we work hard and train hard and we compete to win these big matches," said Brock. "It’s always nice to get wins when we play, but when you have those marquee match ups, those are the most important challenges to see if were ready to progress and move forward."
LSU will return to action tomorrow against Arizona at 10:20 on Day 2 of the Green Wave Invitational.
