Cross Country to Host Annual LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to host their annual LSU Invitational meet Saturday morning at Highland Road Park with the 5k race beginning for the women at 7:30 a.m. CT followed by the men at 8:10 a.m.
Joining host LSU will be Millsaps College, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Southern Mississippi (women only), Southern-New Orleans, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette and Xavier.
Head Coach Khadevis Robinson is concerned less on individual performances, as he expects to see more of a team effort in tomorrow’s meet.
“My focus this week is getting the team to fight for each other,” Robinson said. “The key to cross country is running as a team. Once you are able to run as a team, everything else can fall into place.”
In the past two seasons, LSU’s men and women have dominated this annual meet. The Tigers took home first place in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and the Lady Tigers finished first in 2014 and second in the 2015 campaign.
Sophomore Dajour Braxton will look to defend the men’s 5k title he won a season ago when he finished the LSU Invitational with a winning time of 15 minutes, 20.65 seconds. Braxton is off to a fast start to the 2016 season after also leading the Tigers at the Rice Invitational in Houston a week ago where he placed third individually.
Also returning from LSU’s team champions last fall are seniors Christian Johnson and Blair Henderson; juniors DC Lipani, Bryan Stamey, and Jack Wilkes; and sophomore Jackson Fountain. Johnson followed Braxton in second place in last year’s race, followed by Henderson in fourth, Wilkes in fifth, Lipani in ninth, Fountain in 10th and Stamey in 14th.
Sophomore Hannah Bourque is the top Lady Tiger returning from last year’s second-place team finish for the LSU women when she earned a seventh-place individual finish in the 5k race in 2015. Also returning to the lineup with top finishes a year ago are sophomore Hollie Parker (eighth), junior Rebecca Little (ninth), sophomore Erika Lewis (10th), senior Jenna Walker (11th), senior Ashley Welborn (17th) and junior Hannah Deworth (18th).
Also running for the Lady Tigers at this year’s meet will be Danielle Avery, Ellen Barkemeyer, Travia Jones, Annie Jung, Ka’Lynn Jupiter, Oksana Lawrence, Kailyn McCarley, Bryiana Richardson, Ruby Stauber and Amelie Whitehurst.
Next on the schedule for the LSU cross country team is the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas. Both teams will travel to the Watts XC Course, and the meet begins on Saturday, Sept. 24.
