COLLEGE STATION, Texas – LSU's cross country teams wrapped up the 2015 season at the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday morning with three runners finishing in the Top 40, including senior Morgan Schuetz's 12th-place finish.
The regional meet took place at Texas A&M’s Dale Watts XC Course, where the men raced the 10k course and the women raced the 6k course.
Arkansas swept the regional meet while taking first place in the 10k and 6k races as the men scored 51 points and the women scored 40 points. The Razorbacks, along with the University of Texas, advanced to the men's and women’s NCAA Championship races to be held in Louisville, Kentucky.
Arkansas’ Dominque Scott won the women’s meet with a time of 19 minutes, 35.3 seconds, while Houston’s Brian Barraza took home first place in the 10k race with a time of 30:07.3.
LSU raced four athletes, two runners in the men’s 10k meet and two runners in the women’s 6k meet. With only four runners, the Tigers and Lady Tigers did not post a team score.
“We brought a smaller team this meet, but I’m really excited for my teammates,” Schuetz said. “I think Coach (Khadevis Robinson) prepared us well throughout the entire season.”
Schuetz led the way for the LSU cross country teams by clocking a personal-best time of 20:23.5 for 12th place out of 162 runners.
“Overall the race went well,” Robinson said. “Morgan earned All-Regional honors and ran a personal best. The challenge for me is trying to replace Morgan for next season. I’m already stressed about that.”
Schuetz finished her senior season earning All-Region honors by finishing in the Top 25 individually and improving her time by 1:20 from last season’s regional meet when she placed 42nd overall.
Freshman Dajour Braxton, the 2015 SEC Men's Freshman Cross Country Runner of the Year, posted another solid performance finishing 28th with a time of 31:13.9. Braxton missed All-Region honors by three spots.
Junior Christian Johnson finished shortly behind Braxton with a time of 31:26.3 for 36th place. Braxton and Johnson paced a little over a five-minute mile for their first 10k meet of their careers.
“Both Dajour (Braxton) and Christian (Johnson) ran extremely well,” Robinson said. “That is their first 10k ever. For Dajour to get 28th and almost make the All-Regional team as a freshman, that is pretty good. Christian had his most competitive race and had a solid personal-best time. It was a good place for him also.”
Rounding out the 6k meet for the Lady Tigers was freshman Hannah Bourque, placing 108th with a time of 23:01.3.
“They all ran solid times,” Robinson said. “All in all, you come out in a good place. You run four people, get four personal best times and come out with four great performances. This will take us in the right direction.”
After finishing the 2015 season at the regional meet, LSU will be back in action on Jan. 8 when they step on the track for the first time by playing host to the Purple Tiger Invitational Indoor Track Meet at the Carl Maddox Field House.
