Thursday Night Hitting Academy is an opportunity for local softball players to train with a max of 11 other softball players their age to develop their fundamental offensive skills. The academy will be ran by assistant coach Sandra Simmons with help from other LSU softball staff. Athletes that are in 6th grade and below will register for Tiger Cub Hitting Academy and athletes in grades 7th and up will register for Tiger Elite Hitting Academy. Each session will be created around our hitting philosophies here at LSU and will give the hitter an opportunity to take home multiple progression drills. This academy is designed to build off of the month prior and big deeper into becoming a top offensive player.

Tiger Cub Hitting Academy will have an emphasis on pitch recognition, different contact points, body awareness, power, bat speed, approaches, and Live AB’s. Hitters will begin their first session on September 12th with a plan that is focused around body awareness and the different contact points for each pitch and location. After getting a solid foundation for our swings, athletes will concentrate on power and bat speed the second month, October 10th. The last session in the fall, November 7, will go deeper into early pitch recognition and situational approaches. Each session will also end with the girls getting live at bats off an arm circle and/or machine to help translate what was learned into game like feelings.

Tiger Elite Hitting Academy will have an emphasis on pitch recognition, contact points, power, exit velocity, approach and launch angle, and live AB’s. Players will start the fall hitting academy on September 19, becoming familiar with our language for hitting at LSU and master early pitch recognition and contact points for each pitch and location. October 24 will be focused around generating more power out of each athletes swing and increasing the exit velocity of each ball that comes off the bat. The last month, November 21, will be geared around the approach and launch angle and being able to take home some specific numbers to improve. Each session will also end with the girls getting live at bats off an arm circle and/or machine to help translate what was learned into game like feelings

Camp will be divided into two sessions, a defense/pitching session and offense session. Join us for one portion or the entire day!

Defense/Pitching session: Pitchers will work on improving spin, accuracy, and power with head coach, Beth Torina, as well as current LSU pitchers and manager, Ryker Chason. Catchers will get time with assistant coach, Lindsay Leftwich and team to become better blockers, framers, and receivers. Position campers will spend time with assistant coaches, Howard Dobson and Sandra Simmons, focusing on proper throwing mechanics and position specific skill work.

Offense session: Hitters will be led by some of the best minds in our state. Hitters and slappers will build a strong base for the swing with an emphasis on fundamentals of the swing. Skill work will be broken down by lower half, hand path, contact points, and extension. All campers will hit live in Tiger Park with feedback from a LSU softball staff member.

Hitting camp will consist of skill work in the morning and LIVE-AT-BATS off of pitchers in the afternoon. The skill work will focus on contact points, vision, pitch recognition, bat speed and launch angle, and more. Hitters will have the opportunity to transfer the skills learned in the morning session to live-at-bats off of the pitchers in Tiger Park. During the afternoon session, hitters will take an in-depth look at the mental side of hitting, study keys to situational hitting, and learn different approaches for different pitchers and pitches. This camp gives athletes the unique chance to take their game to a higher level with more advanced information.

Pitching camp will consist of learning drills specifically targeted for each age/ability level during the morning and throwing to live hitters in the afternoon. During the morning session, pitchers will learn skills to improve spin, accuracy, and power. Pitchers will have the opportunity to transfer these skills directly into live play during the Live At-Bat afternoon session. Live At-Bats against hitters will offer pitchers a chance to learn how to set up a hitter up during an at bat, the “Ins & Outs” of controlling the strike zone, and the mental side of being in the circle. This camp opens a great learning environment as it offers a unique opportunity to face live hitters without the stress of consequences, wins or losses.

Helpful Hint: Our recommendation for this camp is to sign your athlete up for their primary position, as we design this camp to be a little more advanced. Athletes will stay in the camp they register for, for BOTH days. We unfortunately can’t have athletes do pitching 1 day and hitting the 2nd day or vice versa. If a pitcher would like to hit, please sign up for Nighttime Hitting.

You can expect January Elite Camp to educate, motivate, and transform athletes and coaches by current LSU softball staff, current & former LSU athletes, National Pro Fastpitch players, professional clinicians, and top college coaches from across the country. Our goal is to spread as much skill instruction and fundamental drills as possible in the two days of working together for a unique experience.

Hitting sessions will offer drills and philosophies aimed at creating power, recognizing pitches, improving plate approach (contact points & vision) while working on the mental game.

Defensive sessions will be broken up by position and will cover proper footwork, angles, range, overhand throwing techniques in order to prevent injury, and other skills that will mimic an LSU Softball Team practice.

Pitching sessions will be broken up by specific pitch and focus on the entire fundamental base of each pitch. From there advanced skills and spin will be taught through spin drills, body position, & live throwing. Strength and core will also be a major focus for the upper age groups in order to work on creating speed and power. In the afternoon, pitchers will throw to catchers with the aim of transferring the skills to full pitching.
