BATON ROUGE, La. — Tied 3-3, ninth-ranked Jasmine Lee of No. 28 Mississippi State defeated No. 20 Joana Vale Costa 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the Bulldogs’ 4-3 victory over the 15th-ranked Lady Tigers Sunday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.

“I thought we fought hard. There were some courts that I thought did an outstanding job with their intensity and energy level,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “They went out and competed and didn’t really worry about when they missed. Unfortunately there were others who didn’t.”

After dropping the doubles point, LSU got out to a 2-1 lead with wins on courts five and six. Junior Abby Owens won her seventh match in a row and improved to 13-3 and 4-0 in conference play. Owens defeated Kristina Vozniak 6-1, 6-2.

Ella Taylor secured the Lady Tigers’ second singles point on court six. Taylor moved to 12-5 and 3-1 in conference with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jennifer Brown.

Mississippi State responded by winning the next two matches to get out to a 3-2 lead. Skylar Kuykendall and Jessica Golovin both dropped their matches 6-1, 6-4 on courts two and three.

Sophomore Ryann Foster evened the match at 3-3 with a two-set win over No. 51 Anastasia Rentouli. Foster defeated Rentouli 6-4, 6-3 to improve to a perfect 15-0 on the spring and 3-0 in conference.

“All these matches make you stronger and the SEC is so tough,” Julia Sell said. “We have two great opportunities next week. We aren’t trying to play our best tennis now. We are trying to get better now so that we can perform our best at the SEC Tournament and at NCAA’s. We’ll learn from this, but it will definitely sting tonight.”

The Lady Tigers return to the road for Southeastern Conference play. LSU takes on Kentucky at 5 p.m. Thursday and Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. Saturday.
