BATON ROUGE, La. -- The No. 13 LSU women's tennis team (8-3) defeated No. 75 Maryland and dropped its second match of the day against South Alabama, 4-3, Sunday at the LSU Tennis Complex.

“I think we put ourselves in a position to win on a few courts,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “We had a few team match points there and couldn’t pull it out. Matches like this serve as a wakeup call, and we’ll return to the practice courts looking to fix these things.”

To begin the day against the Terrapins, LSU was pushed to the limit in doubles play but ultimately clinched the point. Abby Owens and Skylar Kuykendall started things out with a 7-5 win over Aronelle Sullivan and Ekaterina Tour on court two.

After LSU fell on court one, it was up to Ella Taylor and Skylar Holloway. The duo defeated Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams 7-6 (7-5) on three.

The Lady Tigers carried the momentum from the doubles point by winning the first set on five of six singles courts. Sophomore Ryann Foster pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Tour to remain undefeated for the season.

Taylor defeated Olga Bredikhina 6-1, 6-2 on six to make it 3-0 overall. The win for Ella was the 75th of her career.

Kuykendall clinched the match for LSU on court three with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bredikhina.

With the match in hand, LSU closed out strong by winning two of the remaining three courts. Freshman Jessica Golovin defeated Alexandra Stanova 6-3, 6-3. Joana Vale Costa earned the sixth LSU point with her 7-5, 6-1 win over Aronelle Sullivan.

In the loss to South Alabama, the Jaguars come out of the gate and stole the momentum. Foster and Vale Costa rebounded after the doubles loss against Maryland to defeat Laura Valkova and Michelle Meszarosova, 6-2.

USA took control of the match after that and got out to a 3-0 lead. Alexandria Stiteler defeated Golovin 6-3, 6-0 on court two. Laura Matuskova defeated Taylor 6-2, 6-1 on court six.

LSU didn’t go down without a fight and slowly chipped away at the deficit. Foster earned the first point for the Lady Tigers on court four 6-3, 6-2 over Alina Zolotareva to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Vale Costa followed Foster’s lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Valkova to make it 2-3 overall. Owens took the first set on court five 6-3 but Meszarosova won the following sets 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the match for South Alabama.

Kuykendall defeated Monica Mitta 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) on court three but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars already had the match
