Volleyball Wins September's BASF Team Chemistry Award
BATON ROUGE – Highlighted by an eight-match winning streak to start the season, taking home the team title from the Dog Pound Challenge and scoring a 3-0 sweep of Texas A&M in its SEC opener, the LSU Volleyball team has been named the recipient of the BASF Team Chemistry MVP Award for September.
The Tigers have certainly positioned themselves for an NCAA Tournament berth with their performance early in the 2017 season while picking up eight wins in their 11 matches playing during the month.
LSU’s trip to Storrs, Connecticut, on the opening weekend of September saw the Tigers win nine of 11 sets in wins over Hartford (3-0) and UConn (3-2) on Sept. 1 and Iona (3-0) on Sept. 2 as they were the comfortable winners of the Dog Pound Classic held at Guyer Gym.
They extended their season-opening winning streak to eight matches with a trip through North Carolina the following weekend as they followed a 3-2 win over High Point on Sept. 8 with a 3-0 blanking of LIU-Brooklyn on Sept. 9 in their opening match of the Tar Heel Classic. LSU later bolstered its NCAA Tournament resume with its first RPI Top 40 win of the year on Sept. 22 when the Tigers swept Texas A&M in three sets at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Aggies rank No. 39 nationally in the NCAA’s first Ratings Percentage Index released Monday.
The team’s second SEC win of the campaign was perhaps even more impressive as the Tigers bounced back from a 15-25 setback in the opening set to take the next three 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20 en route to a 3-1 win at South Carolina last weekend.
The Tigers have also been recognized individually for their performance during the month of September as outside hitter/middle blocker Taylor Bannister was honored as the SEC Freshman of the Week with her effort on the weekend of Sept. 8-10. She recorded a .534 hitting percentage while committing just seven errors on 94 total attempts and registering 58 kills against High Point, LIU-Brooklyn and North Carolina.
Bannister recorded a season-high 26 kills in LSU’s 3-2 win over High Point followed by a match-high 14 kills and .667 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over LIU-Brooklyn in the opening match of the Tar Heel Classic. With her additional nine blocks on the weekend, Bannister was the easy selection as the SEC Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.
