MINNEAPOLIS – On the final day of competition, junior Matthew Phillip qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing third overall on men’s platform. He will join Juan Celaya-Hernandez and Lizzie Cui, as both qualified to compete in all three events.

Phillip’s strongest event has always been platform, and it showed today. After prelims, Phillip found himself in fifth place with a score of 365.80. After scoring a 360.80 in the finals for a two-list score of 726.60, Phillip took bronze and NCAA qualification that went to the top six finishers.

Matt McClellan finished seventh overall, just one spot outside of NCAA qualification. After diving to a score of 337.25 in the prelims and a season-best 340.40 in the finals, McClellan was less than five points from qualification.

Juan Celaya-Hernandez, needing a top-12 finish to compete on platform at the NCAA Championships, finished eighth overall with a score of 675.15. The sophomore will now compete at all three events at the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Dakota Hurbis made his first final of the week, and finished 16th overall with a score of 564.50

Both Lizzie Cui and Makayla Robillard made the finals for women’s platform. Cui needed a top-12 finish to compete in all three events at the NCAA Championships, and she finished in 12th place, scoring a 475.45.

Robillard finished 15th overall, diving to a score of 423.50. Robillard set her season-high in the finals, scoring a 220.30 in her final list of the season.

“I’m happy with the week,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Going into this year, I knew our zone meet was going to be very deep and tough. Juan and Lizzie solidified qualification in all three events at the NCAA Championships and Matt Phillip will join them on platform. Matt McClellan came up just short but posted two of the best lists of his career on platform. We are looking forward to competing in Columbus and Minneapolis the next two weeks. This is what we train for all year long. I’m excited!”
