KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU diving team managed to get four in the finals on day two of the Tennessee Diving Invitational. Juan Celaya-Hernandez finished second on the men’s one-meter springboard, and junior Lizzie Cui finished third for the second day in a row, this time on three-meter springboard.

“Overall, I’m happy so far with our progress and development,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “We’ve had some struggles and some missed dives, but everything is pointing in the right direction.”

The men were able to get both Juan Celaya-Hernandez and Matt McClellan into the finals, where Celaya-Hernandez took silver with a score of 373.25, ending his season-long undefeated streak in the event. McClellan finished eighth overall, scoring a 313.45.

“Juan missed just one dive in the finals, otherwise his undefeated streak would’ve remained alive,” said Shaffer. “He has won three out of four events at this competition.”

Matthew Phillip was just three points shy of reaching the finals, finishing 14th overall after scoring a 295.35. Dakota Hurbis finished 31st overall with a score of 234.70.

The women also sent two to the finals, and junior Lizzie Cui finished in third for the second day in a row. Cui ended up with a three-meter score of 352.80, improving on her prelim score of 327.60. Makayla Robillard also made the finals, finishing 12th overall with a score of 246.65.

Rileigh Knox ended the day 22nd with a score of 256.75.

“Lizzie missed a little bit in the prelims, but rallied and did an excellent job in the finals,” explained Shaffer. “It was great for Makayla to make the finals, too. We look forward to finishing strong on platform tomorrow.”

The Tigers will conclude the Tennessee Diving Invite with the men’s and women’s platform, which starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
