BATON ROUGE – Despite the cold temperatures and wind, the LSU women’s golf team played an amazing round of golf to jump to a second-place finish at the 2019 LSU Tiger Golf Classic after starting today’s round in fourth place.

LSU shot a 4-over 292 to make the leap passing up nationally-ranked teams TCU and Old Dominion. It was the fifth-lowest round of the season for the Tigers.

“This was a great event for us,” said LSU first-year head coach Garrett Runion. “Any time you get to play at home, you want to prove that you can take care of business. We had some good teams in the field like nationally-ranked TCU and Campbell, teams inside the top 25. Any time you can pick up wins against them, you feel like you accomplished something. I know our ladies were set to come out and prove that they belong inside the Top 25 and hopefully we did that with our final round today.”

Sophomore Kendall Griffin was the top finisher for LSU in third place, the best finish of her career. She shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 6-over 222 for the tournament.

Freshman Presley Baggett, the only LSU player to have every round she has played count this season, shot even par in the final round to finish tied for sixth  at 8-over 224. The 72 tied her low score for the season.

Senior Kathleen Gallagher bounced back to shoot 1-over 73 in her final round of competition on LSU’s home course and tied for 18th overall in the standings.

Sophomore Alden Wallace finished the tournament tied for 15th, while junior Monica Dibildox finished tied for 28th as all five players finished in the Top 30 for the first time this season.

"The last few tournaments we’ve gotten off to really strong starts then stumbled a bit in the final round,” said Runion. “Today we knew this weather was coming. Yesterday we were wearing sunscreen and short sleeves. We knew it was going to be a trying day and our ladies were ready. They got their minds right, got in their bubble and grinded the whole way out and put up a very strong final round to get us into second place.”

No. 25 Campbell won the 2019 LSU Tiger Golf Classic with a score of 32-over 896. UTSA’s Ana Gonzalez won the individual title with a 4-over 220.

LSU will close out the regular season at the Clemson Invitational on April 7-9 before the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, April 17-21. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
