BATON ROUGE – Third-ranked Duke played early and posted a number that proved to be good enough for the first round lead Sunday in the LSU Tiger Golf Classic at the University Club.

It was a day of patience and determination for the field of 96 golfers as they battled not only cool temperatures but a wind that blew consistently at 16-22 miles per hour with gust much higher for those on the course in mid-afternoon.

By then, the Duke team, winners of the event on two occasions, had gotten off the course and was sitting in the clubhouse having lunch. Especially enjoying her day was Celene Boutier, the Duke senior from France who posted a five-birdie, no bogey round of 67 to enjoy a five-shot lead in the individual competition after one round.

She became the second women’s player to shoot 5-under par in a competitive round on the renovated U-Club layout (since 2010), joining Kelley Wallace of Georgia, who shot 67 in the 2013 LSU Tiger Golf Classic.

Duke posted a 5-over par play five, count four player total of 293 to hold a six-shot lead over fourth-ranked Arkansas at 11-over 299 entering Monday’s second round. Tennessee was third at 302 with Tulane and LSU tied for fourth at 17-over 305, 12 shots out of the lead. Houston, Mississippi State and Kentucky are still in moving distance in a tie for sixth at 19-over 307.

Blakesly Warren of Tennessee, Ji Eun Baik of Mississippi State and Kayla Thompson are tied for second at even par 72. Three other golfers – Cara Gorlei, of Arkansas, Sarah Bae of NC State and Cylia Damerau of Kentucky – are tied for fifth at 1-over 73.

The field of 96 averaged 78.95 for the 18 holes with ironically the newly redesigned and shortened par 4 17th (formerly a par 5) playing as the hardest hole on the course at 0.58 over par. The wind brought plenty of trouble into play on the hole.

Senior Elise Bradley, the defending champion, posted a round of 3-over 75, holding her round together after an early stumble on the par five third hole. Freshman Kathleen Gallagher had three players in her 3-over round of 75 in her first college competitive round over the U-Club and freshman Marina Hedlund posted 4-over 76. Bradley and Gallagher are tied for 11th and Hedlund is in a group T20.

LSU also counted on the opening day a score of 7-over 79 from Allstate Sugar Bowl winner Sydney Cavin.

Tulane was led by Emily Penttila of Tulane who posted 2-over 74 and is in a group tied for eighth place.

The Green Wave and Lady Tigers will play with Houston in the middle wave of Monday’s second round off Hole No. 1 beginning at 9:15 a.m. The round begins with tee times off 1 and 10 at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free.
