BATON ROUGE -- LSU’s Ryan Schimpf and Blake Dean launched back-to-back home runs twice in a 10-run fifth inning as the fourth-ranked Tigers overpowered in-state rival Tulane, 13-2, in seven innings Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers and Green Wave agreed to end the game following the top of the seventh inning.

LSU (34-12) hits the road this weekend for a pivotal SEC Western Division series at No. 12 Arkansas. Game 1 begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).

The contest will be broadcast by Cox Sports Television and can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network (98.1 FM). In addition, live video (via and audio will be available in the Geaux Zone at

Tulane fell to 26-19 with the loss.

Schimpf and Dean were the first LSU players to blast two dingers in the same inning since Matt Clark accomplished the feat against Duquesne on March 1, 2008.

Dean, who finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, collected his ninth and 10th home runs on the year and pushed his career total to 37, placing him 10th all-time in school history. Schimpf’s two dingers gave him a new career-high of 14 for the season.

“It’s good to see some guys really swinging the bats well as we get ready to go to Arkansas,” LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said. “Schimpf and Dean are two great hitters and two great ball players, and these kids have something special about them.

“Not only do they have the talent, but their attitude, self-confidence and approach to the game is so exemplary that you just hope that all these young kids will watch and learn from it.”

Freshman Chris Matulis (5-2) recorded his fifth win of the season as the southpaw hurled 2.2 innings after relieving starter Ben Alsup in the third and surrendered only one unearned run. In addition, senior Buzzy Haydel made his collegiate pitching debut, striking out two in a scoreless sixth inning.

“Buzzy is an all-around ball player who does whatever it takes to help the team,” Mainieri said. “He’s a very unselfish kid and a great guy to have in the program. He was telling me about his high school career as a pitcher, so we took a look at him in the bullpen, and quite frankly, I was pretty impressed.

“He pumped a lot of strikes, and his ball had some life to it. He had a nice curveball and changeup, and I said to myself, ‘Why not? Let’s take a look at him in a game situation.’”

LSU put three early runs on the board to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Schimpf doubled, and Dean followed with a RBI single. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu then delivered another base hit, and first baseman Sean Ochinko scorched a double down the left field line to plate two more runs.

Tulane got a run back in the top of the second and added another in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Tigers unloaded on the Green Wave with their 10-run fifth and never looked back.

Dean and Schimpf accounted for five of the runs with the long ball, but catcher Micah Gibbs also did some damage with a bases-clearing double, and shortstop Austin Nola and Mikie Mahtook drove in runs on a single and a double, respectively.

After Haydel’s scoreless sixth, right-hander Matty Ott closed out the shortened game with a scoreless seventh.

Tulane’s Aaron Loup (2-4) was charged with the loss after allowing nine hits and six earned runs in 4.1 innings.
