IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Missoula pitcher Greg Smith was named the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year earlier in the day on Wednesday and proved why with a brilliant performance in the Osprey’s 7-0 victory over the Idaho Falls Chukars in front of 1,507 fans at McDermott Field. With the win, the Osprey remained five games behind Helena, who beat Casper 6-3, with 15 games remaining in the season.

Smith, who was coming off his worst outing of the year, pitched masterfully this time out as he allowed only two hits in six shutout innings, while striking out eight batters. His eighth strikeout of the night gave him 83 for the season, which is tops in the league and set a franchise record surpassing Angel Rocha’s total of 82 set in 2003. The southpaw from LSU also picked up his sixth win of the year, tying him with two other pitchers for the league lead.
