Seven Tigers Selected on Day 2 of MLB Draft

BATON ROUGE -- Seven LSU players were selected Friday in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

The Tigers chosen in the draft include left-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo (9th round, San Francisco); first baseman Matt Clark (12th round, San Diego); right-handed pitcher Louis Coleman (14th round, Washington); left-handed pitcher Blake Martin (17th round, Minnesota); right-handed pitcher Jared Bradford (18th round, St. Louis); third baseman Michael Hollander (20th round, Texas); and junior right-handed pitcher Jordan Brown (39th round, Chicago Cubs).

The seven LSU players selected by MLB clubs represents the most since eight Tigers were taken in the 2001 draft.

Six LSU signees have also been selected in the draft right-handed pitcher Ryan Chaffee of Chipola (Fla.) College (3rd round, Los Angeles Angels); right-handed pitcher JonMichael Redding of Florida Community College (5th round, Los Angeles Dodgers); outfielder Mikie Mahtook of St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette, La. (39th round, Florida); infielder Beau Didier of Bellarmine High School in Tacoma, Wash. (40th round, Pittsburgh); left-handed pitcher Chris Matulis of Park Vista High School in Boynton Beach, Fla. (47th round, Tampa Bay); and infielder Austin Nola of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge (48th round, Colorado).

Verdugo, who will start on the mound for LSU in Saturday’s NCAA Super Regional game versus UC Irvine, is 9-2 this season with a 3.81 ERA in 87.1 innings. Verdugo, drafted in the 47th round last season by Giants, has recorded 33 walks and 79 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .246 batting average.

Clark, the Southeastern Conference home run leader with 25 dingers, is hitting .340 (71-for-209) on the year with 15 doubles, 58 RBI and 52 runs. He was named to both the SEC all-tournament team and to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional all-tournament squad.

Coleman, one of the Tigers’ middle relievers, is 6-0 with a 1.39 ERA and two saves in 45.1 innings. He has recorded eight walks and 51 strikeouts while allowing a .218 opponent batting average.

Martin, a weekend starter for LSU this season, is 5-3 with a 4.88 ERA in 83 innings. A member of the SEC all-tournament team, Martin has recorded 35 walks, 77 strikeouts and a .245 opponent batting average.

Bradford, the Tigers’ closer, is 10-4 with a 4.05 ERA and five saves in 80 innings. Bradford, who has 20 wins and 10 saves in two years at LSU, has recorded 20 walks and 73 strikeouts this season.

Hollander, who has started 206 games during his LSU career, is hitting .307 (67-for-218) this season with 13 doubles, four triples, five homers, 42 RBI, 51 runs and nine steals.

Brown is 4-0 this season with a 5.32 ERA in 64.1 innings. The winning pitcher in last weekend’s NCAA Regional game versus Texas Southern, Brown has posted 28 walks and 56 strikeouts on the year.
