BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes (CCACSA) recognizes six athletes for their scholastic and community achievements each month. Five student-athletes are chosen based on their commitment to academic success, while the Life Skills honoree is selected for their devotion to volunteerism and service to the community.

Here are the January 2019 CCASA's staff Student-Athletes of the month:

•    Faustine Aifuwa, Jr., Women’s Basketball, Dacula, Georgia (Major: Interdisciplinary Studies)

Nominator – Senior Associate Director Carole Walker: “Faustine earned the highest semester grade point average of her career at LSU in the Fall, which was also the top individual GPA for the team last semester. She is a testament to what a change in attitude and effort towards her academic responsibilities can look like for other student-athletes. I am so proud of her.”

•    Chris Curry, Fr., Football, Lehigh Acres, Florida (Major: Sport Administration)

Nominator – Learning Specialist Lauren Bove: “Chris is pushing himself to be the best academically. He works hard in tutoring sessions and is putting in the extra time it takes to make sure that he fully understands his lessons and material. Chris brings positive energy to the sessions, as well as a competitive drive and work ethic. During Finals Week, Chris took advantage of every study opportunity at his disposal, as well as putting in the extra effort.”

•    Rebecca D’Antonio, Fr., Gymnastics, New Orleans, Louisiana (Major: Computer Science)

Nominator – Associate Director Ashley Granger: “Rebecca earned a 4.2 grade point average during her first semester at LSU. She was acknowledged at the 30th Annual Scholars Banquet as a recipient of the Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite Endowed Flagship Scholarship."

•    Zack Hess, Jr., Baseball, Forest, Virginia (Major: Interdisciplinary Studies)

Nominator - Assistant Director Kirstin DeFusco: “Zack is deserving on this honor for his consistent dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom. From the moment he stepped foot on campus, he has approached his schoolwork with the same tenacity that he brings to the pitching mound. Zack is a stellar student and sets a great example for the underclassmen.”

•   Christian Miller, Jr., Men’s Track & Field, Monroe, Louisiana (Major: Sport Administration)

Nominator – Academic Advisor John Parham: “Christian has made steady progress in growing his academic skills since his freshman year. As a jumper on the track & field team, he knows what it takes to make those incremental improvements to become better at his craft and in the classroom.”

•    Life Skills: Claire Weinberger, Jr., Softball, Prairieville, Louisiana (Major: Animal Sciences)

Nominator - Manager of the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Brenton Sumler: “Claire does a great job of matching her major with her community service endeavors. She volunteers at the Farr Park Equestrian Center caring for the animals.”

Accountability – Commitment – Success – Integrity – Diversity – Teamwork – Service – Education

It is through living the values of the Total Team Commitment 2017-2022, particularly education, academic success, and service to the community that six student-athletes are recognized as Cox Communications Academic Center Student-Athlete of the month. These values are fundamental to the growth and development of our student-athletes as they enter to learn, then leave to serve.

The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square-foot facility comprised of teams for academic affairs, student affairs and information technology, who annually serve more than 500 student-athletes. The purpose of the CCACSA is to provide an all-inclusive, student-centered support structure for all student-athletes from matriculation, through graduation, and life beyond.
