Gymnastics Celebrates 2017 Season at Banquet

BATON ROUGE – The LSU gymnastics team and many supporters gathered inside the L’Auberge Even Center Sunday afternoon to celebrate the 2017 season at the squad’s banquet.

Head coach D-D Breaux, associate head coach Jay Clark, assistant coach Bob Moore and volunteer assistant Ashleigh Clare-Kearney presented awards to the gymnastics for their achievement in the classroom, competition arena and in the community.

The banquet began with recognition of letter winners and remarks from Breaux and LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. The team honored the three seniors Ashleigh Gnat, Sydney Ewing and Shae Zamardi. The trio marked the winningest and most accomplished senior class in school history.

Kristen Hobbs Cain, the L Club, special events and community relations coordinator presented the L-Club Captains for the 2017 season. Gnat and Ewing were recognized for their team spirit and commitment to every aspect of the program.

Breaux also recognized Malcom Ward as the winner of the Eye of the Tiger Award. Malcom Ward served as the tabulator for all home meets over the last 40 seasons. He announced his retirement at the end of last season.

The entire team was recognized for winning the Community Service Cup and Ewing was recognized for being named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service team.

For owning a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the academic year, Ewing, Gnat, Myia Hambrick, McKenna Kelley, Erin Macadaeg, Kylie Moran, Lexie Priessman and Kaitlyn Szafranski were recognized as SEC Honor Roll members. Ruby Harrold and Ashlyn Kirby were also named to the SEC First-Year Honor Roll.

Ewing, Hambrick, Kirby, Moran and Szafranski were also named as NACGC Academic All-Americans for finishing the academic year with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Gnat was honored for her four perfect 10.0 scores in 2017. With nine 10’s on her career, Gnat tied for the most in school history.

Gnat, Priessman, Kelley, Harrold and Hambrick earned All-SEC honors after stellar performances at the championship meet. Gnat took home the top honors on vault, beam and floor, Priessman won the first bars championship in more than 20 years and Kelley clinched the meet for the Tigers with a 9.95 on floor.

Kennedi Edney, Kelley Priessman, Sarah Finnegan, Macadaeg, Hambrick, Ewing and Gnat were recognized for earning All-America honors. The group combined to earn 27 All-America honors between the regular season and NCAA meet for a new school record.

Edney, Gnat and Finnegan closed out the individual awards with recognition of their NCAA championships. Edney became the first freshman in school history to win a national championship when she won the event outright with a 9.9875. Finnegan took home the school’s first bars championship with a 9.95. The sophomore earned four All-America honors at the NCAA meet and finished second nationally on floor.

Finally, Gnat was recognized as the 2017 NCAA Floor Exercise Champion. Gnat finished her career as one of the most decorated gymnasts in school history as a four-time SEC Champion, two-time Central Region Gymnast of the Year, two-time SEC Specialist of the Year, 2017 AAI Award Winner, 2017 Corbett Award Winner and LSU’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

To close out the afternoon, the team and staff was presented with SEC Championship and NCAA Super Six appearance rings.

Season tickets for the 2018 season are still available at LSUtix.net. LSU will host six meets in the Maravich Center, beginning with SEC foe Arkansas. The Tigers will also take on Alabama, Texas Woman’s Kentucky, Auburn and Arizona.

LSU will offer a free preview of the 2017 team in Gymnastics 101on Monday, Dec. 11 inside the Maravich Center. Labeled a “Gymnastics Showcase,” Gymnastics 101 will provide fans a first look at the 2017 Tigers who will perform routines on all four events.
