BATON ROUGE -- LSU head gymnastics coach D-D Breaux announced the signing of Baton Rouge native Gloria Johnson to a national letter of intent on Thursday. She will be eligible to compete for the Tigers during the 2008-09 season.

Johnson trains locally at Elite Gymnastics where she is coached by Johnny Moyal.

“Gloria is one of the finest student-athletes to come out of the state of Louisiana in a very long time,” said Breaux. “She hasn’t had the international acclaim, but I would compare her to Kristie Phillips as far as her gymnastics ability.”

Johnson currently trains as a Level 10, but has competed at the international elite level where in 2005 she won the all-around at the National Training Center Qualifier and advanced to the U.S. Visa National Championships.

Last season, Johnson advanced to the Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships and captured the meet’s beam title as well as a sixth-place finish in the all-around. In addition, she has won multiple Louisiana state all-around titles and finished second at the regional championships in 2007.

“With losing just one senior next year, Gloria is exactly what we were looking for to come in and raise the level of this team,” added Breaux.
