BATON ROUGE – LSU freshman point guard Tremont Waters, who made two 30-plus foot three-pointers in the final 12 seconds to beat Texas A&M on Saturday, was named Monday as the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time.
Waters was named the first FOW for the 2017-18 season after scoring 27 points in the season opener against Alcorn State. That was the most points scored by a freshman in an opener since 1976.
Against Kentucky last Wednesday in the Maravich Center and at A&M on Saturday, the Tigers split games, losing 74-71 to UK and defeating A&M on the Waters trey, 69-68.
Waters in the two games averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals. He made 12-of-26 field goals, including seven treys and all eight free throw attempts.
Waters had his third double double of the season against Kentucky, but it was his first involving points and rebounds (18-11). He had 21 points in the A&M game.
For the season, Waters is averaging 17.4 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.4 steals. He is the league leader in assists and steals and is fourth in the league in overall scoring average.
The Tigers go on the road Wednesday at 8 p.m. to face Arkansas in Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville before returning home for a Saturday 7:30 p.m. contest against Alabama. Both games will be televised on the SEC Network and broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network.
