Baton Rouge, La. – For the 10th-straight year the LSU men’s golf team is set to host the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge at the University Club. The two day, 54-hole tournament will commence with 36 holes on Saturday and conclude with 18 on Sunday.
The University Club will play as a par 72 that covers 7,220 yards. The first round of the tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Continuous play will be utilized and the second round will begin right as the first round wraps up. Sunday’s final round is also slated for a 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start.
LSU will play Saturday’s rounds alongside ULM and ULL. LSU’s A squad will consist of Luis Gagne, Nathan Jeansonne, Philip Barbaree, Trey Winstead and Michael Sanders; that crew of five will tee off on holes 1-3 on Saturday morning. Garrett Barber, Chris Woollam, Carter Toms, Hayden White and Drew Gonzales will compete as a team as well and they will go off of the 16th-18th holes to begin the tournament.
The Tigers have won the David Toms Intercollegiate in seven of the past nine years, including four straight dating back to 2014. In 2017, the Tigers won the rain-shortened, two-round tournament with a 11-under par 565; LSU was the only team to shoot under par.
Senior Luis Gagne has earned a share of individual honors at the past two David Toms Intercollegiate tournaments. He shot a 4-under par 144 in 2017 to tie with Jacob Bergeron (LSU) and Lewis George (Central Arkansas), and his 2016 three-round score of 1-under par 215 earned him a four-way share of the individual title alongside Sam Burns (LSU), Brandon Pierce (LSU) and Eric Ricard (LSU).
Nathan Jeansonne has earned a pair of top-10 finishes at this tournament over the years with a runner-up showing as a freshman in 2015 with a 3-under par 213. In 2016, the Keithville, La., native garnered a tie for seventh place with a 5-over par 221.
The 2017 David Toms Intercollegiate title for the Tigers featured four top-10 finishes. The aforementioned Gagne and Bergeron shared medalist honors and Trey Winstead placed in a tie for fifth at 2-under par 142 while Philip Barbaree tied for eighth at 1-under par 143.
The Tigers will duke it out with 12 other teams over the weekend with hopes of securing their fifth-straight David Toms Intercollegiate title. In-state schools Southeastern, Nicholls State, New Orleans, ULL and ULM will be in attendance. The field also features Oral Roberts, Central Arkansas, Pennsylvania, North Alabama, Mercer, Lamar and Troy.
