BATON ROUGE -- LSU defensive end Rahim Alem added his name to another preseason list for a national honor as he was tabbed as one of 55 players nationwide to the 2009 Bednarik Award Watch List, the organizers of the award announced.

The Bednarik Award is presented annually by Maxwell Football Memorial Club and goes to the outstanding defensive player in college football.

Alem has already been named to the Ted Hendricks Award, which goes to the top defensive end in college football.

Alem heads into the 2009 season as one of the Tigers’ starters at defensive end. For his career, Alem has racked up 17 tackles for losses and 10 sacks in 31 games with one start.

Alem, a native of New Orleans, led LSU with eight sacks and 11.5 tackles for losses last season while recording 29 total tackles and seven quarterback hurries. He ranked third in the Southeastern Conference in sacks and eighth in the league in tackles for losses in 2008.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69’ and the NFL Hall of Fame 67’.

Rey Maualuga from the University of Southern California was awarded the 14th Chuck Bednarik Award for his outstanding performance during the 2008 season.
