CCACSA Names May 2019 Student-Athletes of the Month

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes (CCACSA) recognizes six athletes for their scholastic and community achievements each month. Five student-athletes are chosen based on their commitment to academic success, while the Life Skills honoree is selected for their devotion to volunteerism and service to the community.

Here are the May 2019 CCASA's staff Student-Athletes of the month:

•    Sydney Lau, Fr., Soccer, Melbourne, Florida (Major: Chemistry)

Nominator – Senior Associate Director Carole Walker: “Sydney is a chemistry major and has shown a commitment and dedicated work ethic in making sure she does well in her course work. She has attended supplemental instruction sessions, met with her professors and learning specialist as well as working in some additional tutoring sessions. She has to mindset to do well in this major.”

 

•    Clay Moffitt, Sr., Baseball, Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Major: Finance)

Nominator – Associate Director Kirstin DeFusco: “Clay has demonstrated a strong dedication to excelling in the classroom and as a team leader. As a transfer student, he was behind on his major classes and had to play catch-up. He did not take the easy road and, instead, chose a very challenging major. He has successfully navigated the rigorous coursework while competing on a nationally-ranked team. A May 2019 graduate, Clay demonstrates and educates his younger teammates on what it takes to be a student-athlete at this level.”

 

•    Kymber Payne, Sr., Women’s Track & Field, Compton, California (Major: Interdisciplinary Studies)

Nominator – Senior Associate Director Adriana Mason: “Kymber has worked diligently this entire semester to achieve her goal of graduation this month. She requested extra tutoring appointments and focused in on her goal of graduation."

 

•    Cameron Reed, Fr., Men’s Track & Field, Denham Springs, Louisiana (Major: Civil Engineering)

Nominator – Academic Advisor John Parham: “Cameron is determined to do well in his academics with his demanding practice and competition schedule. His drive and work ethic will put him in the best positions to succeed.”

 

•   Jakori Savage, So., Football, Bay Minette, Alabama (Major: Sport Administration)

Nominator – Tutorial Coordinator Assistant Jonathan L’Hoste: “All of my interactions with Jakori have been extremely positive. He is THE most well-mannered football players, if not overall among our student-athletes. Jakori never lost his smile even while he was rehabbing this year.”

 

•    Life Skills: Kristen Nuss, Jr., Beach Volleyball, New Orleans, Louisiana (Major: Kinesiology)

Nominator - Manager of the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Brenton Sumler: “Kristen is very engaged with the four-pawed members of the community through her volunteerism at Companion Animal Alliance. She provides human companionship and works on their interactions with humans by walking dogs and giving some valuable playtime.”

It is through living the values of the Total Team Commitment 2017-2022, particularly education, academic success, and service to the community that six student-athletes are recognized as Cox Communications Academic Center Student-Athlete of the month. These values are fundamental to the growth and development of our student-athletes as they enter to learn, then leave to serve.

The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square-foot facility comprised of teams for academic affairs, student affairs and information technology, who annually serve more than 500 student-athletes. The purpose of the CCACSA is to provide an all-inclusive, student-centered support structure for all student-athletes from matriculation, through graduation, and life beyond.
