Student-Athletes Participate in Big Buddy Tour
BATON ROUGE – With a little bit of the summer months left before the start of the 2014-15 athletic season, members of the LSU student-athlete community took some time out of their schedule to participate in the Big Buddy Campus Tour last week, which hit different spots around campus.
Beginning at the Cox Communications Academic Center For Student-Athletes, freshmen football players Davon Godchaux, William Clapp, Trey Quinn, Devin Voorhies and Abraham Wallace, along with freshmen soccer players Jorian Baucom, Christyna Pitre and Alexis Urch, led the attendees on a tour of the center, and went over what the student-athletes do on a daily basis in the building.
"My favorite part of the day was being able to show them the tutorial part of the academic center, and explaining what all we utilize the building for,” Godchaux said. “It is important for them to know we aren't just athletes, but also students."
Once the tour of the academic center was complete, the next few stops with women’s golfer Sydney Cavin, track and field’s Roger Cooke, Meghan Charbonnet and Chaiss Matthews and softball’s Sandra Simmons and Ali Walljasper included the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and the practice facility where the kids were able to play games, Tiger Stadium and its weight room and training areas and Mike the Tiger’s habitat.
"I really enjoyed our trip to the weight room, and watching the kids perform crunches, pushups and squats with the staff,” Walljasper said. “I think the trip showed the kids that their dreams of attending college or playing sports in college can become reality one day."
The field trip ended with a stop at the football operations center, where Jalen Mills, Jamie Keehn, Duke Riley and DeSean Smith showed off the practice fields and coaches offices, ending with a showing of the football team’s highlight video in the squad room.
