BATON ROUGE – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for October.

Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU's Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

October’s student-athletes of the month are Katie Lagarde [Swimming & Diving], Jarell Martin [Men’s Basketball], Hayden Rettig [Football], Bryiana Richardson [Track & Field] and Andrew Stevenson [Baseball]. Meghan Charbonnet [Cross Country/Track & Field] was selected as the Shaquille O'Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.

Lagarde, Richardson and Stevenson are majoring in kinesiology, and Martin is a sport administration major. Rettig is majoring in interdisciplinary studies, while Charbonnet is an elementary education major.

A freshman distance runner and cross country athlete from New Orleans, La., Charbonnet will compete for the Tigers this season after redshirting last year. She was a four-time all-state cross country runner and led St. Mary’s Dominican High School to three consecutive cross country district championships. Charbonnet recently spearheaded an event put on by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council that welcomed Special Olympics athletes to campus. LSU student-athletes gave tours of the baseball and football facilities and tailgated with the Special Olympics athletes at LSU’s soccer game against Mississippi State on Sept. 29.

Lagarde, a freshman diver from River Ridge, La., joins LSU as a letterwinner from St. Mary’s Dominican High School where she assisted the team in notching the 2011 District Championship. As part of the Summer Academic Success Program, she assisted in hosting 20 campers from Heritage Ranch as they visited LSU.

A freshman forward from Baton Rouge, La., Martin comes to the Tigers as the 2013 Farm Bureau/Mr. Basketball, an award given annually by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association to the top player in Louisiana. As one of the nation’s top prospects in the 2012-13 recruiting class, he led Madison Preparatory Academy to the school’s first state title in Class B in 2013.

Rettig, a freshman quarterback from Los Angeles, Calif., enrolled with LSU in January of 2013 and participated in spring drills. He is a consensus four-star prospect and was honored as a 2013 U.S. Army All-American, as he was one of three quarterbacks invited to play for the West squad at the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Retting ranked as No. 85 nationally in the Rivals100 and the as the nation's No. 5 pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com.

A freshman hurdler from New Orleans, La., Richardson comes to the Tigers as a four-time Louisiana Class 3A & Class 4A State Champion. In 400-meter hurdles, she has racked up a 2013 USATF Junior Olympics silver medal, a 2012 AAU Junior Olympics silver medal, a 2012 AAU Club Nationals silver medal and a 2012 USATF Youth Championships silver medal. Richardson was a top Louisiana recruit for 2013 and ranked within the Top 10 national high school rankings in 400-meter hurdles.

Stevenson, a sophomore outfielder from Youngsville, La., competed in 54 games and started 33 of them during his freshman season. He notched 23 hits, tallied 14 RBIs and belted his lone home run of the season during LSU’s 9-2 win over Stephen F. Austin. The lefty also collected five two-hit games last season.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
