BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team opens the spring season Sunday as the Lady Tigers host Nicholls at noon CT and Southern University at 5 p.m. in a double header at “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
“We are really excited about starting the season,” said LSU head coach Julia Sell. “It’s time to play. We have a double header, so the girls are going to get two good matches right off the bat.”
The first match will mark the 10th meeting between the Lady Tigers and Nicholls. LSU holds a 9-0 series record against the Colonels after defeating them 7-0 in their last contest on Feb. 23, 2013.
Following Nicholls, LSU will square off against Southern. LSU has won all 21 meetings against the Jaguars, including last year’s dominating 7-0 victory.
Both matches will follow the ITA’s new Experimental Format, which will be used thru Feb. 10. The doubles matches will each consist of one set with regular scoring and a tie-breaker at 6-all. Once a team has won two doubles matches, the remaining doubles match will not be completed.
Singles will be the best two out of three sets with each set using regular scoring and a match tie-breaker instead of a third set. All singles matches will be played until the overall match is clinched. At that point, all remaining matches will be left unfinished.
Additionally, there will be no warm-up against opponents before the first point is played in doubles and singles.
