COLUMBIA, S.C. - The LSU women's tennis team (11-9; 4-5 SEC) lost 6-1 to the South Carolina Gamecocks (13-6; 4-5 SEC) on Friday at Carolina Tennis Center.
The Gamecocks came out firing on all cylinders in just their second match following the death of longtime head coach Arlo Elkins last weekend.
"South Carolina really played well today," LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. "They came out inspired after what happened to their coach. All the credit to them, we just need to move on to the next match."
Dominika Kanakova and Anya Morgina defeated Olivia Howlett and Yvette Vlaar 8-5 on court two to open the action.
South Carolina's Josefin Andersson and Keterina Popova then clinched the doubles point for South Carolina 8-3 over Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton on court three.
Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger battled all the way to a tiebreaker on court one, but Jaklin Alawi and Dijana Stojic eventually prevailed finishing doubles play with an 8-7 (7-2) result.
Alawi kept the pressure on LSU with a 6-2, 6-3 result over Howlett on court two
Stojic then overcame Vlaar 6-2, 6-3 on court five to bring the Gamecocks within a point of winning the overall match.
Morgina clinched the dual match 6-3, 6-4 against Wolf on court one.
Kanakova gave South Carolina a 4-0 advantage as she overcame Kaitlin Burns 6-2, 6-3 on court three.
Frankenberger earned the Lady Tigers' point dropping a first-set tiebreaker 7-2 before Popova was forced to retire down a 1-0 in the second. The Gainesville, Fla., native has now won six of her last 10 matches, and she owns an 11-8 record on the dual match season.
Adriana Pereira concluded the proceedings with 6-4, 6-3 win against LSU's Ebie Wilson.
The Lady Tigers return to the courts on Sunday when they travel to No. 2 Florida at noon.
