BATON ROUGE – Joana Vale Costa finished the season ranked No. 87 in singles as announced by the ITA on Wednesday.
“I am really proud of all that Joana has accomplished and I’m excited for her to finish the year on the ranking sheets,” said LSU head coach Julia S. Sell. “She didn’t get to finish a lot of her matches this year and she played through some injuries, so these kind of results are even more impressive. We haven’t seen the best of Joana yet, and I know that she is determined to keep climbing.”
During her first semester as a Lady Tiger, Vale Costa earned ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year, All-SEC Second Team, All-SEC Freshman Team and All-Louisiana Second Team after compiling an 11-8 record with a 10-7 record on court one.
The Portugal native’s record included three wins over ranked opponents, including a dominating 6-3, 6-0 win over Auburn’s No. 29 Pleun Burgmans. In addition, Vale Costa was two points away from defeating both Pepperdine’s No. 26 Lorraine Guillermo and Mississippi State’s No. 65 Georgiana Patrasc when the matches were left unfinished.
