BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team played a tight match as they initially jumped ahead on several courts, but the Lady Tigers fell 4-0 to No. 2 Georgia on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.

“I told the girls before the match that I wanted them to go out and focus on the small things they have been working on,” said LSU head coach Julia S. Sell.  “We went up on a few courts and then got a little nervous and backed off, but we had a really great start I though.”

LSU has a 10-12 (2-10 SEC) record on the season, while Georgia is now 17-3 (10-1 SEC).

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles.  The Bulldogs started the match with a 1-0 advantage over LSU as Mia King won court six by forfeit.

On court two, Abigail Owens battled hard but could not overcome No. 21 Maho Kowase as she fell 6-0, 6-2.  Georgia then took a 3-0 lead as Gabrielle Otero dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Kate Fuller on court four.

Noel Scott went back and forth on court one, but ultimately met defeat 6-4, 6-3 at the hands of No. 19 Silvia Garcia as the Bulldogs clinched the match.

Prior to the match, the Lady Tigers honored seniors from both Georgia and LSU for Senior Day.  Each senior Bulldog received a rose, while the Lady Tigers celebrated senior Ariel Morton’s career with a framed picture and roses.

In addition to honoring the seniors, the team recognized former LSU women’s tennis players and former head coach Pat Newman.  The players honored include:

Ebie Strauss
Ann Ellis
Elizabeth Palfrey
Megan Falcon
Julie Roof Lewis
Ivan Bienvenue
Patty Ruth Wilkenson
Steven Comeaux

The Lady Tigers take the court again on Saturday, April 12 as they host a double header with Arkansas and Jackson State.
