BATON ROUGE – On the heels of a weekend road split, the No. 55 LSU women’s tennis team is set to square off against the No. 69 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m. CT in W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
LSU is 8-7 (1-5 SEC) this season after falling 4-0 to Texas A&M last Sunday. Although the Lady Tigers fell to the Aggies in College Station, Texas, the weekend on the road proved to be positive as the Lady Tigers captured their first SEC win of the season bydefeating Missouri, 6-1. Five Lady Tigers captured singles wins during that victory, highlighted by Abigail Owens, who has now won six of her last ten singles matches with two going unfinished.
“I really feel that this team has been improving with every match,” said LSU head coach Julia S. Sell. “You can see by our results that we are really close with Top 25 and Top 10 teams, so our confidence has grown regardless of the team result. With the long and difficult SEC season, that is what we have to stay focused on.”
The Bulldogs are currently 9-7 (1-5) on the season after falling to No. 11 Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Entering the match, the Lady Tigers hold a 26-10 series lead over the Bulldogs after falling 4-3 in a long and difficult battle on March 24, 2013.
“Last year, we played on two freezing indoor courts,” said Sell. “We ended up losing in a very difficult match. This year, being at home on six courts will certainly change the dynamics, but Mississippi State is a very good team. I expect another great SEC battle this Friday.”
