BATON ROUGE – Joana Vale Costa was one of five players invited by the Portuguese Tennis Federation to represent Portugal in the Fed Cup from Feb. 1-10. Although she will not be able to attend due to the demanding collegiate schedule, this is a great honor for both the freshman and the LSU women’s tennis team.
“Besides the Olympics, this is the highest honor you can receive in our sport,” said LSU head coach Julia Sell. “To be asked back is a testament to Joana’s talent and charisma.”
The Fed Cup is the largest annual international team competition in women’s sports, with over 95 nations having participated in 2013.
Portugal will participate in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I, which is the highest group for that region.
Vale Costa represented Portugal in the Fed Cup in 2013, playing against some of the top women in the world.
“Last year was fun and I was happy to be invited again this year,” said Vale Costa. “I was expecting to go back, but I like it so much here that I’m fine not being able to go.”
The Lady Tigers open the spring season on Jan. 19 as they host a doubleheader against Nicholls and Southern at ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium. Admission to all home matches is free.
