BATON ROUGE - The LSU women's tennis team begins its second weekend of competition Friday as Kaitlin Burns, Caroline Hudson, Mary Jeremiah, Ariel Morton and Ella Taylor travel to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invitational.
Play begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, as the doubles team of Burns and Morton takes on Edyta Cieplucha and Heidi Stewart of SMU, and the LSU newcomer pair of Jeremiah and Taylor will battle Julia Mongin and Kaysie Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian University. Hudson will also compete in doubles alongside Klaudia Gawlik of McNeese before all five players compete in singles at 9:30 a.m.
The tournament will mark the first action of the young season for senior Kaitlin Burns.
"I am excited to see Kaitlin compete for the first time this fall," head coach Julia S. Sell said. "Her game really turned a corner this past week in practice so I am anxious to see if it holds up in a tournament."
Freshman Ella Taylor excelled in singles to the semifinal round of the Black Flight at the Longhorn Invitational two weeks ago hosted by the University of Texas at Austin. She kicks off her singles competition Friday against Giada D'ortona of the University of Texas at Arlington.
"I have been very encouraged by the team's daily progress," Sell said. "They have maintained their work ethic and intensity, and they are starting to feel more confident on court. My expectations of them are higher this weekend because we have been working on several specific areas of their games, and I want to see them continue to improve."
