HOUSTON - Newcomer Caroline Hudson of the LSU women's tennis team advances in both singles and doubles in the Rice Invitational along with senior Kaitlin Burns, who will continue to the next round in singles.
Hudson is competing in doubles alongside Klaudia Gawlik of McNeese, and together the pair defeated Emily Conrad and Madelyn Walker of Abilene Christian University 8-6. The freshman then wrapped up her first day of competition with a quick win in singles over Gabriella Jansson of the University of Houston 6-0, 6-1. She will take on Brooke Dennis of UTA Saturday.
"Caroline Hudson picked up a good win and had the cleanest match of the day," head coach Julia S. Sell said. "We have been changing a lot with her game and equipment over the past few weeks, so it was nice to see her settle down and feel more confident on court."
In her first action of the season, Burns came back from a first set loss to take the match over Heidi Stewart of SMU 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.  The senior will compete against Stephanie Nguyen of Rice University in the second round of competition Saturday.
Mary Jeremiah, Ariel Morton, and Ella Taylor will enter the consolation rounds of their singles flights. The Jeremiah and Taylor pair along with the Morton and Burns duo will also enter their doubles consolation flights.
"We struggled in doubles today, but we bounced back with some extremely competitive singles matches," Sell said. "Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton battled for over three hours in their respective matches and really played some of their best tennis thus far. Overall I was pleased to see the team stay positive and disciplined toward their individual development. They all experienced personal victories where they could feel themselves improving, and I expect to build on that tomorrow."
Doubles play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT with singles play to follow at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. All second-round singles and doubles matches, including consolation rounds, will take place Saturday.
