CCACSA Announces Student-Athletes of the Month
BATON ROUGE – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for May.
Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU's Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.
May’s student-athletes of the month are Smylie Kaufman [Men’s Golf], Maliah Mathis [Gymnastics], Michael Saco [Men’s Swimming], Madelene Sagstrom [Women’s Golf] and Bennett Schiro [Football]. Jamie Keehn [Football] was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.
Mathis, Saco and Sagstrom are all majoring in interdisciplinary studies. Schiro is majoring in finance, while Kaufman is majoring in marketing. Keehn is a sports administration major.
Keehn is entering his junior season with the Tigers and his second season as the full-time starting punter. The Miners Rest, Australia native had 18 of his 43 punts downed inside the opponents 20-yard line last season. He recently spent time at Gardere Christian School playing football with students while emphasizing the importance of education and academic success in the ultimate pursuit of a college education. Keehn also volunteered to help kids paint at the Neighborhood Arts Project in Gardere as well as participated in the Tiger Athletic Foundation’s “Thank-A-Thon” to personally thank donors for their contributions to LSU.
A senior golfer from Birmingham, Alabama Kaufman has enjoyed consistent success both on and off the course in his time at LSU. He recently led the Tigers to a second-place team finish at the 2014 SEC Championships, the program’s best finish in the event in 25 years. Kaufman also finished second individually with an 11-under par and is the fourth golfer in the last six years to crack the Top 5 of the final leaderboard at the SEC Championships. He’s been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll on three occasions during his career. Kaufman’s commitment to service was recognized with a selection to the SEC Community Service Team following his junior season.
Mathis, a senior from San Antonio, Texas was a contributor for the Tiger gymnastics team that finished third in the nation in 2014. She participated in four meets and posted a season-best 9.875 on floor on Senior Night versus Kentucky. Last season, Mathis earned First-Team All-America honors for her performance at the NCAA Championships Semifinal on vault.
Saco is a senior swimmer from Miami, Florida who qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2013 and 2014. He was a member of the 200 freestyle relay in both seasons. This is the second time Saco has been honored with the Student-Athlete of the Month distinction.
In her three years as a member of the women’s golf team, Sagstrom has racked up several honors and distinctions. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Sagstrom is a member of the Swedish National team. She earned All-SEC First-Team selections in 2013 and 2014, the sixth golfer in program history to earn multiple All-SEC First-Team picks. Sagstrom also was named to the All-SEC Freshman-Team in 2012. Her 72.73 stroke average this season is fifth-best in the SEC.
Schiro is a fullback on the football team and redshirt freshman out of Jesuit High School in New Orleans. This is his first Student-Athlete of the Month award.
For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
