KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The LSU Diving squad sent one female to the women's three-meter final and two males to the men's one-meter final during the first day of the three-day Tennessee Diving Invitational.
The Tigers are competing against SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. In addition, Clemson, Duke, James Madison, North Carolina, Penn State, Southern Methodist, South Dakota State and Virginia are present.
"Freshman Cassie Weil had an excellent performance in the prelims and finals," Diving Coach Doug Shaffer said. "We had two of the guys in the finals on the one-meter. They are going to get better as they continue to progress. We needed to work out some of the cobwebs that were there. It is part of the learning experience."
Weil finished second on the three-meter with a score of 318.45 after notching a score of 312.20 in the prelims.
Junior Kevin Leong ended his one-meter run in seventh place with a score of 315.65. He posted a total of 317.35 in the prelims.
Junior Daniel Helm notched an 11th place finish on the one-meter with a score of 300.00. He registered a score of 315.05 in the prelims.
Senior Elle Schmidt came in 18th on the three-meter with a score of 259.65.
The women will compete on the one-meter and the men will compete on the three-meter tomorrow.
"I just want to see them perform the routines like they have been doing and I want them to have that competitive mindset that puts them in a position to be successful," Shaffer said. "If we continue to do that, we will get better as we work through some of the bugs of the holidays as we move forward in the competition."
Diving prelims will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT) each day. Finals will begin immediately after prelims. Live results can be found on Divemeets.com.
