BATON ROUGE -- The LSU Women's Swimming (1-0, 0-0 SEC) team will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Vanderbilt on Wednesday at 3 p.m. (CT) in a mid-week dual meet.
"It is going to be a good test for us. We're going to go with pretty much the most competitive lineup that we can go with," LSU Swimming Coach Dave Geyer said. "We have three weekends after this where we are competing back-to-back, so this will give me a good gauge of where we are at competitively."
The Lady Tigers ended last year's conference run in fifth place and totaled 347 points. Vanderbilt finished 10th at the SEC Championships last season and finished with 78 points.
"For us it takes us out of our comfort zone as far as going out in the middle of the week, and it sort of mocks our conference meet, where the first day of competition is on a Wednesday," Geyer said. "It gets us up and racing the middle of the week, which is good for us at this time of the year. Everyone's focus is on development as we approach the SEC Championships."
The Lady Tigers are looking to lower their times after defeating Centenary on the road and swimming in the annual Purple vs. Gold Intrasquad Meet. NCAA Qualifiers senior Sara Haley, juniors Torrey Bussey and Rainey White and sophomores Amber Carter and Marlene Niemi along with the team's other veterans will use this meet to gauge their progress at this point in the training season.
In addition, this meet will also help the coaching staff see where the freshmen fit in the team's lineup and where the swimmers fit in relays.
"We're really looking to see how some of the freshmen are developing in the water as they move from a club based training to a collegiate based training," Geyer said. "It will be good to see how their bodies react when we throw them into a mid-week situation."
The entire LSU Swimming and Diving program will travel to Auburn, Ala. to take on Auburn on Oct. 20.
