BATON ROUGE -- The LSU men's and women's swimming team will open its 2012-13 campaign on the road against Centenary College on Saturday Sept. 22.
The Tigers will be competing against instate Centenary for the first time in the program's history.
"There are only two men's programs in the state of Louisiana: LSU and Centenary," Swimming Coach Dave Geyer said. "I think it is important no matter what division or wherever any one is ranked that these two teams compete against each other on occasion to showcase our sport within the state. It is good for our sport and it is good for Louisiana."
In addition, the meet will allow five men and eight women to make their collegiate debuts in a road environment.
"I want to see how our team interacts in a competitive field," Geyer said. "I want to see what type of leaders we have in this program and who is going to step up and take that leadership role as we move forward."
The meet will feature a revised format with 50-yard and 100-yard stroke swims. The teams will swim the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.
The divers will join the swimmers in the team's annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad Meet on Sept. 28 at the LSU Natatorium. All admission to LSU Swimming and Diving home meets is free.
