Weil Wins 3-Meter Bronze at SEC S&D Day 3

ATHENS, Ga. -- Sophomore Cassie Weil scored a 357.45 to take bronze on three-meter during day three finals of the 2014 Southeastern Conference Championships.

“Cassie was our star today,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “She was focused and confident today. She did two rock solid lists today. I’m really excited because this meet has given her confidence going into the rest of championship season.”

In the final standings of day three, the Lady Tigers are in seventh place with a total of 285. The men’s team is in 10th place with a point total of 255.

It was the LSU freshmen that took over the 400 IM, Brandon Goldman led the way with a third place finish in the C final. Goldman’s time of 3:51.55 is the fifth best time in program history.

Sophie Weber touched the wall fifth in the B final of the women’s 400 IM with a mark of 4:15.61. Garrett House also swam in the C final of the men’s 400 IM, his 3:56.30 is ninth in LSU history.

The 100 butterfly had LSU swimmers in the A, B and C final. In the championship final, Frank Greeff tied for seventh with a time of 46.83. In the B final, Logan Rysemus finished sixth with a time of 47.54. Alex Linge finished fifth in the C final with a mark of 47.98.

In the prelims of the 100 fly, Rysemus moved up to fourth all-time in program history. Linge posted a time of 47.68 for the ninth-fastest time in LSU history.

Junior Amber Carter took first in the C final of the women’s 100 fly with a time of 52.92. That time is now third in program history. Freshman Kara Kopcso followed in third place with a mark of 53.17 for a tie for the fourth-fastest time in LSU history.

In the women’s 200 free C final, Danielle Stirrat took first with a time of 1:46.61. Stirrat’s time is second all-time. Megan Cox finished eighth in the championship final with a mark of 1:47.30. In the prelims, Cox posted a time of 1:46.49 for third all-time.

In this morning’s time trials, Torrey Bussey posted a time of 53.52 for seventh-best time in program history.

“There were a number of big time swims for our program today,” Dave Geyer said. “As the meet progresses, we need to put ourselves in position where our prelim swims are setting us up for higher finishes. Frank, Megan and Logan did an outstanding job of swimming fast in the prelims to put themselves in the A and B finals.”

In the prelims of the women’s 3-meter, Alex Bettridge finished 20th with a total of 291.30. Sophomore Allie Alter finished in 26th with a total of 261.55.

Day three of SEC Championships begins at 9 a.m. Thursday morning with prelims of the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke. The men’s platform prelims will follow at 12 p.m. Finals of the events will take place in the night session starting at 5 p.m. Live video can be found at ESPN3.com
