AUSTIN, Texas -- In just his first appearance in a USA diving senior final, Sean McKinney qualified for the finals and earned a sixth place finish on the 1-meter springboard.  His 341.30 points in the prelims were enough for fifth place and a finals berth. McKinney finished the day with 660.45 points.

Alex Bettridge also competed for the women on the 1-meter springboard. She finished in ninth place with a score of 255.45. It was her highest finish and .35 points away from making the finals.

“We had an awesome first day at the AT&T USA Diving Winter National Championships,” LSU Diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “Alex reached her highest US national finish with a ninth place finish on the 1-meter. In his first USA senior final, Sean McKinney qualified for the finals and placed sixth.”

Sophomore Cassie Weil will get her first chance to shine with the quarterfinal of the women’s platform Wednesday morning. Sean McKinney will also compete in the men’s 3-meter quarterfinal. The semi final for both events will be held in the night session.

The remainder of the team took to the boards for day two of the Alabama Diving Invitational. Kevin Leong scored 302.75 points for fifth place on the 1-meter. Zakary Rowton scored career high 284.45 points for eighth place.

Katie Lagarde competed on the 3-meter and placed sixth with career high 244.20 points

“I’m proud of the performances of the tiger divers today at the Alabama invite,” Shaffer said. “Zak and Katie both had career high performances. Their hard work is really paying off.”

The Alabama Diving Invitational concludes tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. with platform competition. All three LSU divers will compete on the platform.

Redshirt junior Daniel Helm also competed in the championships as an unattached diver. He finished with 676.50 points for fifth place. It was his highest finish and his first US senior finals.
