BATON ROUGE -- LSU sophomore swimmer Michael Young has been named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Week for the his performance in the 22nd ranked Tigers (2-1, 1-1 SEC) 196-104 victory over 20th ranked Alabama on Friday in the LSU Natatorium.
Young helped set the tone of the meet as he paced the first place 400 medley relay team (3:18.18) with a lead off split of 49.83. The Tigers capitalized on the early momentum and never looked back.
The Australian also earned a pair of victories in the backstroke events, notching season bests in both events. Both his 100 back (49.65) and 200 back (1:48.53) put him in position to post NCAA provisional marks before the championship season. Over the course of the meet, Young earned 29 points.
"Michael was a key component to the start of the meet, and obviously his individual wins speak for themselves," Swimming Coach Dave Geyer said. "It is always an honor when the conference recognizes our athletes' efforts."
Young's 100 back time ranks him fifth in the conference this year. His 200 back ranks sixth in the conference this year.
At last year's SEC Championships, Young earned SEC All-Freshman Honors and posted the program's fifth best all-time 100 back (48.16) in a sixth place finish.
