PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 2012-13 LSU women’s golf season came to an end Saturday in the NCAA West Regional golf tournament as LSU finished tied for 12th and out of the qualifying spots for advancement to the NCAA Women’s Championships.

The Lady Tigers, despite shooting their best round of the tournament on Saturday, finished eight shots out of the number for the eighth qualifying spot, finishing in 12th place in the 24-team field. LSU shot a 12-over 296 to finish the 54-hole event over the Stanford University Golf Course at 45-over par 897.

The top five teams had no trouble advancing with Southern California winning the event at 7-over 859 with Purdue at 8-over 860. Vanderbilt was third at 17-over 869, five shots clear of South Carolina at 874. Fifth place belonged to host Stanford at 875.

San Jose State became the only team from the afternoon session of teams 13-24 in the standings to advance shooting even par on the final day to get to a three-way tie for sixth at 37-over 889, making that the final qualifying number with Arizona and Oregon. San Jose State eliminated Baylor at 38-over 890 which finished ninth and Georgia, which hosts the national champion, did not qualify at 39-over 891.

LSU finished in a tie for 12th with Texas A&M and Kent State.

The young LSU team made a late surge with about five holes to play in the morning session of the round, getting three birdies to go from +41 to +38 and a three-way tie for the eighth and final spots, but in the end the number would go lower than that with San Jose State’s play in the afternoon.

“It’s a young team and it was a great learning experience for this group of players that will certainly help us in the future,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We had a shot at it. We gave ourselves a chance; we just weren’t able to finish it off. This course has very tight fairways and we were not able to get the ball in the fairway enough.”

LSU got strong rounds from juniors Lindsay Gahm and Ali Lucas as both shot under par rounds for the Lady Tigers. Gahm after shooting 1-under 70 on Friday, posted a 2-under 69 on Saturday with a four birdie round to finish in the top 20 in a tie for 14th place at 4-over par 217. Gahm moved up 66 places from the first round when she shot 78.

Lucas had a three-birdie round of 1-under 70 to finish at 14-over 227, also like Gahm improving in each round of the regional event.

On the final day, LSU also counted a 5-over 76 from Madelene Sagstrom and a 10-over 81 from Nadine Dreher.

LSU concluded its season ranked 30th in the country in the Golfstat rankings.
