HANAHAN, S.C. - Madelene Sagstrom posted an eagle and a birdie over the final four holes to shoot a back nine 3-under 33 to pace LSU with a 2-over 74 in its opening round of the season at the 2012 Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Course Sunday.

Sagstrom, a sophomore, rallied from a 5-over 41 on the opening nine and is tied with a group in 49th place on a day when 32 players shot even or better on the par 72 course. Isabelle Lendl of Florida and Marta Sanz of Auburn both shot 5-under par 67 in the opening round of the 54-hole event that runs through Tuesday.

The LSU team posted an opening round of 15-over par 303 on the day and stands in a tie for 21st place in the 24-team field that featured 10 of the 15 teams from last year's NCAA Championship event. Six teams posted even par or better, led by Southern Cal at 3-under 285, one shot better than Duke, Virginia and Florida at 2-under 286.

LSU's other returning starter from a year ago, who like Sagstrom played all 34 rounds, junior Lindsay Gahm posted a 3-over 75, going 37-38. ULM transfer junior Ali Lucas of Crowley had a 4-over 76 in her LSU debut, while the other counting score was a 78 from freshman Nadine Dreher.

LSU, which teed off in the morning wave on Sunday, will go in the afternoon on Monday in the second of three rounds. Live scoring can be found at LSUsports.net through Golfstatresults.com. Follow LSU women's golf on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and on Twitter @LSUwomensgolf.
