Sagstrom Even-Par at Difficult SEC Golf
Communications Sr. Associate
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Temperatures struggling to reach the low 50s and north winds send scoring soaring on a difficult golf course in good conditions Friday in the Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championships over the Blessings Golf Club.
But freshman Madelene Sagstrom was unaffected by the brutal conditions, posting birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to get back to even par 72 and fifth place in the individual competition after one round of the 54 hole event that runs through Sunday.
Sagstrom finds herself just three shots out of the lead on a day when only five total players shot even par or lower and only 32 of the 60 players broke 80.
LSU is in seventh place after a first round that saw the leaderboard change almost with each update by the Golfstat crew. The Tigers posted a 22-over round of 310, but LSU is just four shots out of second after the first round of the tournament.
Alabama was the team least affected by the weather for the longest part of the round, hanging around par for the first nine holes before finishing at 9-over par 297. They are nine shots clear of Auburn at 18 over 306. Florida is third at 307 with Georgia at 308. Arkansas and Ole Miss are in front of LSU in a tie for fifth at 21-over 309.
Patricia Sanz of Auburn and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora lead the individual competition with three-under par scores of 69 with Marina Alex of Vanderbilt at 2-under 70 in third. Stephanie Meadow led Alabama with a 1-under 71 and is in fourth position just in front of Sagstrom, a native of Sweden.
"It's a really, hard golf course and the weather made things even tougher," said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. "We were very close to putting a couple of things together that would have helped us. We just need to keep our composure and come back out (Saturday) and get a few things to go our way."
The Lady Tigers will tee off on the 12th hole Saturday in the second round with South Carolina and Mississippi State beginning at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring can be found at LSUsports.net at Golfstat.com.
