GLEN COVE, N.Y. – A strong 1-under par opening nine holes was the key to successfully making match play in another United State Golf Association national championship for LSU sophomore Carly Ray Goldstein as she finished in a tie for 21st in the Women’s Amateur qualifying Tuesday at the difficult Nassau Golf Club.
Goldstein played holes 10-18 in one under par 34 with two birdies in the first four holes to finish Tuesday’s second round at 1-over 71. She finished the 36 holes at 4-over par 144 and easily advances to the Round of 64 for match play on Wednesday.
Goldstein’s 36-hole total of 4-over looks strong on a course one national media member described Tuesday in a tweet: “It's long. Players call the rough "brutal" and the greens tricky.”
The front nine holes has proved a little troublesome for the Coral Springs, Fla., Lady Tiger as she posted 2-over on holes 1-9 both days. Tuesday, after turning at 1-under, Goldstein doubled the first hole, before playing the holes 2-9 in even par with two birdies and two bogeys.
The cut after 36 holes came at 8-over par 148 as eight golfers had to play off for the final seven spots on the match play tree.
Goldstein now starts a quest to become the second Lady Tiger to win the women’s amateur title joining Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan who won the title in 2001 as the close of a summer in which she won three major regional/national match play titles.
This will be the second round of 64 match in a USGA national event that Goldstein has played in the last month. Just a few weeks ago, Goldstein advanced through qualifying to play in the round of 64 match in the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links.
The Golf Channel will have live coverage and highlights of the first round of match play beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and throughout the rest of the competition.
Goldstein will have the final tee time on Wednesday in the round of 64 at 12:40 p.m. against Ally McDonald of Fulton, Miss., a first-team All-America senior from Mississippi State.
