NEW ORLEANS – LSU women’s golfer Madelene Sagstrom made a dramatic rally from a 5-over par start after seven holes to finish 36 holes at 2-under par after the first two rounds of the rain-delayed Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.

The teams were forced into a 36 hole round that finished in near darkness after Sunday’s initial round was rained out. The 17-team field, which is the first tournament of the spring semester for LSU, will compete the tournament on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Sagstrom started her day on the seventh hole and played the had two doubles and a bogey in the first seven holes to quickly go 5-over par. But from there her and her LSU teammates began to catch fire and move forward as they did during the fall semester Sagstrom proceeded to play the next 23 holes 8-under par and posted back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 to finish the 36 holes in 2-under par 142 and in a group tied for ninth place.

As a team, LSU also made a strong comeback once it got back in the grove of playing again. LSU found itself at 10-over early in the first round and moved it back to just 3-over par 291 by mid-day. The Lady Tigers posted a 5-over 293 in the afternoon round to finish at 8-over 584. That was good for eighth place in the 17-team field.

UCLA is the leader at 14-under par 562 (285-277) with Southern California in second at 10-under 566 (285-281). Florida is third at 4-under 572 (283-289) with Oklahoma State and Alabama tied at 1-over 577.

LSU posted some great scores for their first tournament to go with Sagstrom’s under par day as senior Ali Lucas, who had some key rounds in the fall, started off strong again with rounds of 73-72 for a 1-over 145. Senior Lindsay Gahm had rounds of 74-73 for a 3-over 147 and freshman Caroline Nistrup posted rounds of 73-77 for a 150.
