HILTON HEAD, S.C. - With a team that is continuing to improve and move up in the Golfstat rankings, the LSU women's golf team takes part for the first time in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate beginning Friday at the Long Cove Club.
The event is a hands-on event by the former lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish and present-day country music star who will appear in Baton Rouge in late May at the Bayou Country Superfest at Tiger Stadium. Rucker was scheduled to perform a concert for the participating teams Thursday night at the local arts center.
LSU and host South Carolina will be joined by 13 other teams in the field for the three-day event which runs through Sunday. Joining them are: Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Furman, Georgia, North Carolina, TCU, Tennessee, UCF, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest.
The Long Cove Club will play to 6,211 yards and a par of 72.
LSU's sixth place finish in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn last week moved LSU up six more places in the Golfstat rankings to 35. The Lady Tigers have continued to get solid play from up and down its five players and a couple of late difficulties kept LSU from a top four or five finish in the event.
Sophomore Madelene Sagstrom and freshman Elise Bradley both had strong showings, tying for 13th place in the rain-shortened 36-hole Sugar Bowl tournament at 2-over par 146. Both of them are in the lineup along with juniors Ali Lucas and Lindsay Gahm, and freshman Nadine Dreher.
Sagstrom is ninth in the Southeastern Conference in stroke average at 72.64, with Gahm 21st at 74.07.
The weather forecast is good for the three days with cool temperatures but sunshine predicted Friday through Sunday.
After this event, the preparations speed up for the 2013 edition of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge. This year's tournament moves a week later on the calendar to March 22-24, with a field of 14 teams in town for the three-day event.
