Lady Tigers Golf Off to Fast Start at Tar Heel
Communications Sr. Associate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The LSU women's golf team's young lineup played a strong first round Friday at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, posting a fourth-place total of 6-over par 294 over the UNC Finley Golf Course.
LSU counted no score worse than 3-over on a day when several teams struggled on the back nine that sent some ranked teams to some high numbers.
But for Coach Karen Bahnsen's Lady Tigers, the team made its goal of showing continued improvement and didn't let a bad hole multiply into more as the round went on.
Junior Lindsay Gahm continued her stellar play, posting a 1-under par 71 to stand in a group tied for seventh place after 18 holes. Gahm is four shots out of the lead held by Baylor's Hayley Davis.
Sophomore Madelene Sagstrom made late birdies on the 16th and 18th holes to finish at 2-under 74, the same round posted by junior transfer Ali Lucas, who after an opening double-bogey played even par golf the rest of the round to post her 74. Lucas and Sagstrom are tied for 20th place in the individual competition.
LSU's other counting score was a 3-over 75 from freshman Nadine Dreher.
"This team continues to work extremely hard," LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen said of the day. "Our goal is to improve each day and every tournament we play. (Friday) was a good start."
Virginia was the only team to crack par on the opening day, shooting 2-under 286, while host North Carolina and Baylor are the other teams in front of LSU at even par 288. LSU posted two shots ahead of Duke in fifth, while South Carolina is sixth at 10-over.
The second round of the event is set for Saturday. Live scoring can be found at LSUsports.net through Golfstatresults.com. Follow LSU women's golf on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and on Twitter at @LSUwomensgolf.
