Men's Golf Moves to Fifth at Carpet Capital

ROCKY FACE, Ga. – LSU junior Stewart Jolly fired a 4-under par 68 to put himself in contention for the individual title, while the ninth-ranked Tigers broke par with a team score of 1-under par 287 to move into a tie for fifth place following Saturday’s second round at the 25th-annual Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic being held at The Farm Golf Club.

Jolly followed an even-par 72 on Friday with a 4-under 68 during Saturday’s action to move up seven spots on the leaderboard into a three-way tie for third place with a 36-hole score of 4-under par 140.

The Birmingham, Ala., native will tee off in Sunday’s final round six shots off the pace as Georgia Tech All-American Ollie Schniederjans fired his second-straight round of 5-under 67 to take a three-shot lead over Bailey Patrick of North Carolina with his two-day total of 10-under par 134. Jolly is tied for third place with the Georgia duo of Michael Cromie and Joey Garber.

Jolly’s effort helped guide the Tigers into a fifth-place tie as seniors Smylie Kaufman and Andrew Presley and junior Curtis Thompson also posted counting scores for a team round of 1-under par 287. The Tigers are tied for fifth place with defending tournament champion Texas at 8-over 584 in two rounds at this year’s Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic.

After opening the day with a 10-shot lead in the team race after firing an 8-under par 280 on Friday, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets followed with a 1-over par 289 on Saturday to finish the day with a four-shot edge at 7-under par 569 for the tournament. Georgia ended the day in second place at 3-under 573, followed by North Carolina in third place at 2-over 578 and Clemson in fourth place at 3-over 579.

Jolly was brilliant while firing a bogey-free round of 4-under par 68, highlighted by an eagle at the par-five 12th hole followed by back-to-back birdies at the par-three 13th and par-four 14th holes.

Thompson posted his best round of the weekend with an even-par 72 to move into a tie for 23rd place on the leaderboard at 3-over 147. Kaufman also finds himself in a tie for 23rd place overall after shooting his 1-over 73 on Saturday afternoon, while Presley added a 2-over 74 toward LSU’s team score to move into a tie for 44th place at 6-over 150 after 36 holes of this year’s championship.

Freshman Zach Wright rounded out the lineup with a round of 7-over par 79 to finish the day in a tie for 70th place overall at 12-over par 156 for the tournament.

The Tigers will wrap up the 25th-annual Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic while playing alongside Clemson and Texas in Sunday’s final round as they will tee off from the front nine beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT.
