BATON ROUGE - The Iowa Hawkeyes and the LSU Tigers dominated the play on the first day of the LSU National Invitational at the University Club as both teams finished 36 holes of play under par in the 54-hole event.

But Iowa has a 6-shot advantage going to Sunday's 8:30 a.m. shotgun start final round after shooting rounds of 281 and 287 for an 8-under total of 568. LSU, behind by four after the morning round, lost a few shots late in the round, and trails after shooting 285-289 to post 2-under 574.

The two have separated themselves from the rest of the 12-team field, making Sunday's pairing a near match play event. Purdue made a big move in the second round, going from a tie for seventh to third, 11 shots further back from LSU, at 9-over par 585 (302-283). The Boilermakers 5-under round was the best of the afternoon round. LSU, Iowa and Purdue will be paired together over the final 18.

Minnesota is fourth at 585 with Louisiana Lafayette and Louisiana Tech tying for fifth with Iowa State at 15-over 591. The Cajuns had rounds of 301 and 290, while Tech posted rounds of 292 and 299.

Curtis Thompson, playing as an individual counter only for LSU, had rounds of 71 and 69 is alone in third at 4-under 140.

First round leader Steven Ihm of Iowa fell back to fourth at 3-under 141 after opening with a five-under 67, the low round of the event, which was equaled by Thomas Bass of UNCW as he moved from 39th to 10th in the individual competition.

Austin Gutgsell of LSU is tied for fifth at 2-under 142 (71-71), while Andrew Presley (74-70) and Sang Yi (69-75) are tied for 10th at even par 144.
