SHREVEPORT, La. - Senior standout Sang Yi fired rounds of 1-under 71 in the first round and 2-under 70 in the second round Monday to lead the LSU men's golf team into sole possession of third place in the team standings after the first day of competition at the third-annual David Toms Intercollegiate being held this week at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport.
Yi also wrapped up the opening day of the event in third place on the leaderboard as he sits in a three-way tie for third place with a 36-hole score of 3-under par 141.
The Tigers followed a 5-over 293 in the first round with their lowest team score of the 2011 fall campaign with a 1-under 287 in the second round for a 36-hole team score of 4-over par 580 in Monday's action.
After opening with a 5-under 283 in the first round, the Oklahoma Sooners wrapped up the first day of the tournament with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon to grab a six-shot lead over Ole Miss in the team standing at 7-under par 569. Following LSU in fourth place is Tulsa at 6-over 582, while both Lamar and SMU are tied for fifth place in the team standings with matching 36-hole scores of 9-over 585.
Lamar actually held the team lead after the first round while opening with a tournament-best 7-under 281, while finishing the day with a 16-over 304 in the second round to fall back into a tie for fifth place.
Yi is off to a flying start for the Tigers during his senior season as he is sure to contend for his first crown while wrapping up the first day just three shots off the pace. Oklahoma's Michael Schoolcraft fired scores of 6-under 66 and even-par 72 to take the lead with his 36-hole score of 6-under par 138.
Yi opened the 2011 fall season by matching his career-best finish after tying for third place overall during the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic while firing a 5-under 211 for three rounds at The Farm Golf Club at Rocky Face, Ga. He followed that effort with a Top 20 finish a week ago at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational where he finished in 15th place overall with a 54-hole score of 4-over 220.
Fellow senior Austin Gutgsell followed a 4-over 76 in the opening round with a season-low 1-under 71 in the second round to finish the day in a tie for 20th place at 3-over 147. Also finishing the afternoon in a tie for 20th place at 3-over 147 was sophomore Smylie Kaufman with rounds of 1-under 71 and 4-over 76.
There were actually five Tigers who finished the first day of action at the David Toms Intercollegiate with matching totals of 4-over par 148 to tie one another for 26th place.
Sophomore Landon Lyons carded rounds of 4-over 76 and even-par 72, while sophomore Andrew Presley posted back-to-back scores of 2-over 74 and freshman Curtis Thompson scored an even-par 72 and 4-over 76 to help lead the LSU starting lineup. Adding scores of 4-over par 148 while playing as individuals with the Tigers were sophomore Franco Castro and Stewart Jolly.
Rounding out the scoring for the LSU individuals on the first day of action at the David Toms tournament was freshman Myles Lewis with his 8-over 152 in two rounds to tie for 45th place overall.
The Tigers will compete alongside Oklahoma and Ole Miss in Tuesday's final round as they tee off on the front nine at holes Nos. 1-4 with a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m. CDT.
